Motorcycle Checklist

  1. Check the fluids in your bike.

  2. Change the oil in your engine.

  3. Check the transmission fluid.

  4. Check the water levels in your battery and the terminals on the battery.

  5. Switch on the power to see if the lights are all working.

  6. If your bike has a chain, make sure there is proper freeplay in it, and you may need to clean and oil it.

  7. Inspect and test your brakes to be sure they are in good working order.

  8. Check the brake lights and your headlight.

  9. Check the brake linings for width and surface.

  10. Check the gear shift and rotate the handle bars through the radius of their movement.

  11. Check the tires for wear and check the tire pressure with a calibrated gauge.

  12. Check the tire treads to be sure nothing is lodged within them.

  13. Inspect the spark plugs. Normally, spark plugs require replacement every 24 months or 30,000 miles to maintain optimal fuel and engine performance.

  14. Make sure your state inspection and registration are up to date.

  15. Turn your motorcycle on and let the engine idle so that oil has a chance to line pistons and cylinders.

  16. Check the throttle to ensure that it will not let you down.

  17. Check the settings of your rearview mirror, the clutch, and the brakes one more time.

  18. Take your bike on a short spin around the block just to be sure everything is ok.
